Day 351

Aye aye aye.

So Isabelle had croup a month ago. It got better and went away. And then yesterday it came back. So I took her to her doctor's offices urgent care and yikes. So, she has these small spots on her upper back called petechiae. You may need to zoom in on this picture to see them.

They are broken blood vessels. Most often they are caused by coughing or vomiting. However, when those are the causes - they appear on the neck, under eyes, chest, face and/or inside of the mouth. Not ont he back. And... adding to that, she has them in other places as well, like her legs. It's not a good thing for them to appear below the chest. Add to that that her liver felt slightly enlarged and that kids with down syndrome have a 2-3% chance of getting leukemia and that those are symptoms of it... and the doctor basically said we needed to go to the ER right now. The good news is that her lungs sounded mostly clear and that she has vomited or had a fever. And is eating just like normal and pooping and peeing like normal. And very active so it's highly unlikely that's what it is but better to be safe... So we went.

It took 2 hours of waiting in the ER before they saw her.

Then another hour before they started doing anything. We saw a nurse, a med student and a doctor. Then another hour went by, They they drew blood to check her platelets and complete blood count. It was terrible. It took 30 minutes to find a vein and she screamed the entire time.

Then they took x rays of her lungs. They sit them in a contraption that looks like a medieval torture device. This isn't her but this is the device. I had to hold her arms up.

Then we waited for 90ish minutes for results to come back. She conked out while waiting.

Finally the supervising doctor came in and told us all the tests came back normal and that the spots are there because she's fighting a virus. They gave her steroids and we were sent home.

Since she has small airways she is likely to get croup often and we should see a doctor each time. And any time she gets those spots we should see a doctor as well. Awesome...

By the way, croup is not contagious. She has a cold and since she has small airways, her body reacts to colds in this way. It's inflammation of her airways. It's just like how some people's bodies react to peanuts but you can't catch a peanut allergy.
